Vancouver Island Vacation: Part 1 November 28, 2006

I was being all excited about my trip to Vancouver Island earlier this month, counting down the days, and I haven’t even bothered to come back and tell you about it! My initial goal was to pack my journal so that I could record the things we saw, said, and did.
We’ve been home for 2 weeks and I’ve been meaning to record some of the more memorable moments. I hate reading long blog entries, so I’m going to break up the 10 day trip into “episodes”. We took lots of pictures, and I have them all on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cdnchick/
I realized that I had forgotten my journal at home within 4 hours of us leaving the house. We had entered the rocky mountains, and were about 20 Km outside of the town of Jasper. A semi truck was stopped on the road in front of us, and when we came to a stop behind the truck, I could see one set of hooves on the road in front of it. It was a mountain sheep, which in Jasper, could be more of a nusiance than a novelty. After sitting there for a good 5 minutes, the Golf Pro decided to go around the truck so we could continue on our journey. As we passed, we saw one (only one!) sheep standing right in front of the truck, not moving. In our mirrors, we could see the trucker get out of the truck, and shoo! the sheep off the road! That was my first good laugh of the trip.
It was about a 14 hr drive, including the 1 1/2 ferry ride to Parksville from Edmonton. We left cold and snow behind, and were greeted with overcast skies and pouring rain. The ferry ride over to the island was most amazing. It stopped raining for the ride, the sky cleared up, and it was almost a full moon, and it didn’t seem dark at all. We stood on deck at the back of the ferry the whole trip, as that was where it was the least windy. We watched as airplanes came into view in the sky, and get in position for their landing at Vancouver airport. We actually didn’t know they were planes at first, and were kinda hoping that they were UFO’s!
When we got to the house we were staying at that for the next week, I was AMAZED. The house was a block from the ocean (though there was no access to it without trespassing on someone’s back yard), and absolutely beautiful. It was nothing at all like I was expecting, and it was a nice surprise. We had to hunt around the back yard to find the key that was left for us, and discovered the outdoor hot tub! We let ourselves in the house, changed into some dry clothes and explored every room; and there were alot! The house owners left us a note saying we could stay in any bedroom except the master room. We had a choice of 3 bedrooms, which were all fully furnished, and had a different color scheme (this is a summer house), so that wasn ‘t a huge problem.

Oh ya! This house also has a bonus room, which has nothing done with it yet. Hardwood floors, blue walls, and huge windows on all sides. When I opened the door to this room, I literally jumped up and down, I was so excited that I had a yoga room!!!!!

Was the house a vacation rental, home exchange, or something else? Just curious how these arrangements came about.
Vancouver Island vacation experience
I couldn’t find any good travel news for you, so I started searching for blogs that were talking travel and found this article on Vancouver Island. It’s only part 1 of the vacation experience and more “episodes” are promised. This…
The house belongs to friends of ours. They live here in Edmonton, but travel there every few weeks. We just happen to be vacationing at a time when they weren’t there.
p.s: Now I’m really feeling pressure knowing that someone is looking forward to hearing more about the trip!
No pressure. But I do have a few thousand people a day reading my blog and now waiting for your next episode…
Thanks for the info on the house. I was just curious because I’m always writing about hotels, vacation rentals, home exchanges, etc. on my blog.
Vancouver Isand is beautiful!!! You can have some bigger city stuff if you go to Victoria. Lots of experimental theatre and decent shoppiing. There are lots of younger panhandlers there, however. I was really surprised, but there they are.
Once you get 10 miles north or west of Vicxtoria (and away from the east coast) , ou are in beuatiful woodlands and , and out of most trapppings of civilzation.
A cool first stop would be Captain Morgan”s B&B in GEnoa Bay. Not easy to find, but beautiful setting. You will get a surprise in the main living room!
Then drive over to Tofino, which is in the middle of nowhere. If you have the bucks, go to Clayoquot Wilderness Resort and Spa. (Don’t go to the more famous Wickaninish Inn . It is over priced and pales in comparison to the Resort. ) The Resort is not really like a resort. You aare really out in the boondocks. You can stay in tents. But they are unolike any tents you have ever seen . Thick carpets.King beds. Antiques. And Tim cooks wonderul food. John and his wife are the hosts, and , man, do they make you fell at home. Kayak, fish, run a little white water, Hikek whatever.
You can tell I love the place, but the $$$$$ are high. If you can’t spend the bucks, there are plenty of cheaper places in Tofino
Enjoy!!
